VALERIE SMITH WRIGHT | Psychotherapy in Oak Park

About

Psychotherapy

I create a gentle, motivational environment to help clients work on anxiety, stress, depression, grief, trust difficulties, abuse/trauma, as well as career and life transitions.

My style is warm and supportive. I believe humor is ESSENTIAL to relieve tension, break out of negative thinking and make the therapy process more enjoyable.

Addiction Treatment

I have specialized experience in working with many different forms of addiction – drug, alcohol, food, gambling, sex and codependency.

I work on both the compulsive behaviors as well as the underlying grief, anxiety, depression, abuse (sexual, emotional, physical) and other complicating issues.

My education included providing 4,000 hours of supervised addiction counseling.

Eating Disorder Counseling

I provide eating disorder treatment for anorexia, bulimia, compulsive binge eating and compulsive exercise.

Marriage & Couples Counseling

I have worked helped to repair many marriages and relationships that have been damaged by the effects of addiction as well as infidelity or communication problems. I help couples reduce pain and rebuild the love & connection that feels like it is gone. I help couples to achieve a deeper connection than prior to the crisis.

Education & Formal Experience

I am a Licensed Clinical Professional Counselor in Illinois – which essentially means I have a Masters Degree, I have passed multiple licensing exams, and am approved to bill third party insurance payers.

I received a Master of Arts in Clinical Psychology (Counseling Specialization) from The Chicago School of Professional Psychology.

I also completed a  Master of Education in Curriculum & Instruction and a Bachelor of Arts in English – both from The University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign.
